LANGUAGE TABOOS IN VIETNAMESE AND KOREAN
Abstract
Language taboos are a common phenomenon in every language. This phenomenon manifests itself in communication, where people need to avoid using words that could potentially offend or upset the listener. The use of taboo words can shift the conversation towards negativity and disadvantage, so people need to avoid them by using alternative language. Linguistic taboos are a complex language phenomenon related to cultural elements such as ethnicity, religion, beliefs, customs, and traditions. Avoiding the use of taboo words specifically reflects how we communicate in different situations. Exploring taboo words in Vietnamese and Korean helps us understand the similarities and differences in ethnic cultures, as well as how to use alternative words to avoid cultural shocks during communication.
