Abstract

Alfred Thayer Mahan was an American naval officer and historian who has been called “the most important American strategist of the nineteenth century”. In 1890 Alfred Mahan published the book “The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660 – 1783”, providing the framework to determine the role of sea power for developing and expanding the nation power. In the article, the author analyzes Vietnam’s potential for developing sea power based on the Mahan’s theory in the modern context. From there, the author also identify advantages and limitations, propose some solutions to build and protect Vietnam’s sea power.
